On the arrival day (i.e. “Day 0” – Saturday, July 14) we’ll have a brief German lesson during and after dinner.
We’ll begin by tracing the development of the German language over time, explain some of the differences in the various German dialects, and look at some trends affecting German today, including the infamous “Denglisch” or the intrusion of English words into die deutsche Sprache! We’ll then learn some phrases that will be useful over the course of the Olympiad, including “What country are you from?” “Where is the bathroom?” “How much for that Döner Kebab?” and “Look at my shiny new gold medal!” Like all events on arrival day, this will take place at the Berlin-Wannsee Youth Hostel.
