IAC Journeys Returns for Summer 2027!

Day Trip: Potsdam & Wittenberg, July 17

IAC Journeys is delighted to announce its fourth summer of family travel opportunities in conjunction with our world championship-level events! Families attending the 2027 International History Olympiad will have three different tours to choose from. All IAC Journeys are designed specifically for families with children who are interested in the history and culture of our destination countries. IAC Journeys feature a mix of organized and independent sightseeing which visit the most famous sites in each city, as well as special spots that aren’t well-known but are well-worth seeing. We aim to visit a variety of sites at a pace that is both suitable for children and which takes full advantage of as much time as we have at each destination. IAC Journeys are staffed by veteran IAC staff members, most of whom have helped lead IAC Journeys in prior summers, but we also rely on local guides with insider knowledge as well.

A special hallmark of multi-day IAC Journeys are optional friendly competitions that are open to all tour guests. Questions used in bee tournaments on tours are typically past questions from prior IAC events, though new questions are used when needed.

For questions on any of the IAC Journeys for 2027, please contact IAC Executive Director, and primary tour leader, David Madden, directly at david@iacompetitions.com.

Day Trip to Potsdam & Wittenberg Draft Plan

The cities of Potsdam and Wittenberg lie just outside Berlin and are of great interest to students of world history of all ages.

On the official Olympiad arrival day, Saturday, July 17, IAC Journeys will organize a day trip to both of these destinations, leaving Berlin in the morning and returning in time for dinner. The exact order in which the sites will be visited may vary, as we will need to have buses staggered to prevent too many people arriving at a site at one time. Assuming that the newly-renovated Luther Museum opens on schedule, all groups will visit it. All tour groups will also tour Wittenberg’s historic city center and the cathedral where Luther posted the 95 Theses. In Potsdam, all groups will visit Frederick the Great’s palace, Schloss Sanssouci, and then either the imposing Neuer Palais (New Palace) or, if preferred, the sobering House of the Wannsee Conference, where the Holocaust was planned in early 1942. Families who register by March 1 will be able to select which of these two destinations they prefer to visit. Thereafter, we will specify which destinations we have availability for.

Further details will be available in early November. All the tour details will then be ready by November 23 when registration for the Olympiad will open; Day Trip registration will also open at that time. This tour is presently capped at four buses (i.e. 190 guests), so please register as soon as you can once registration opens!
