We will include sufficient stops along the way for hydration and restrooms.

Naples & Pompeii Day Trip

Walking Tour of Rome

On July 31, we are offering a full-day optional extension trip to Naples and Pompeii, where life stopped in 79 AD with the eruption of nearby Mt. Vesuvius. We will leave Rome at approximately 8am and return at 10pm, and make stops at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples (approximately 2 hours), lunch at an authentic Neapolitan pizzeria, and a chance to tour the magnificent ruins of Pompeii (for approximately 3 hours). Dinner will be at a restaurant en route back to Rome. The cost is $175 for all participants (whether students or accompanying family members) which includes transportation and all entry fees, but not meals. We’ll play some games (and questions on our battery-operated buzzer systems) on the bus ride down as well.

Forum & Coliseum

Forum & Coliseum

The Roman Forum and Coliseum are at the top of every traveler’s life list. We’ll spend 3.5 hours exploring the two (which are located a short walk from each other) with the Arch of Constantine in between. This guided tour will give you a chance to see both from the outside and inside, and to immerse yourself in one of the most historic square kilometers on earth.

Vatican City

Vatican City

Vatican City is the world’s smallest country, the seat of the Catholic Church, and the sole remnant of the Papal States that once included Rome and much of Italy. On this 3.5 hour tour, we will see St. Peter’s Square, tour St. Peter’s Basilica, visit the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican Museums.

Ostia Antica

Ostia Antica

For students who want to see how the Romans lived, a visit to the ruins of Ostia Antica is a must. Ostia Antica is a short train ride from the center of Rome and within 4 hours, students will have a chance to tour Roman houses, shops, civic buildings, temples, and more in ancient Rome’s port city. This is particularly recommended for students who will not be taking part in the visit to Pompeii, but even so, the ruins at Ostia Antica are particularly well-marked and well-preserved.

Competing on Site
Students will not only have the chance to tour Rome, but to compete in some of its iconic sites! At the moment, we are planning on the following:

  • Running Combined in the Circus Maximus
  • Sports History Bee in the Circus Maximus
  • Roman History Bee Finals in the Coliseum
  • Catholic History Bee Finals in St. Peter’s Square / Vatican City
  • Art History Scramble at a museum (to be announced) in Rome.

Further opportunities may be added to this list. For further details on each event, see the descriptions under the Events menu.

Short walking tours & Possible additional tour destinations
Depending on staff availability and student interest, other tours may be offered to see nearby sites (e.g. certain churches, museums, other ancient Roman sites) that are not otherwise a part of trips listed here. Such sites could include the Baths of Caracalla, the Pyramid of Cestius, the Great Synagogue and Jewish Museum, as well as short trips to get a gelato or a fresh slice of Roman pizza.
